Have you ever witnessed a painting that just fits with your current mood? Have you ever been absorbed into one painting and can’t get it off your mind? The painting Still Life with Grape Juice and Sandwiches (Xenia) did just that. This painting is a still life, and the artist is a master at hyperrealism. Meaning this painting can be seen as a real-life circumstance. As you may have noticed from the title, this painting by David Ligare features a pitcher of grape juice with a stack of bologna sandwiches, staged against the California coast inside an open stone-walled structure. As if something you’d see in a 1900’s TV show, or even picture inside of a hardy boys book, this still life painting is classic, simple, and realistic all at the same time. From yellow to dark red, the painting holds more vibrant colors in the food than I’ve ever observed in other still life paintings. This is the reason why I chose this painting to publish, the subtleness and detail stood out to me. I stood pondering this painting on the wall of the de Young Museum in San Francisco for quite a while.
